EQ + IQ = high functioning child and successful adult

"What's your target? What's your drive? What makes you tick? What's your goal?"

We here it from any motivational speaker or leader.

These are heavy questions that most adults struggle to answer. Pinpointing your passion means pulling yourself outside daily drudgery to focus on something you often push to the side... your emotions.

However, the reason these questions are asked by leaders and people who've "figured it out" is that tapping into your emotions can give you clarity on who you are, how you view the world and ultimately shape your destiny by setting you back on your own path.

How does this relate to education?

If children are emotionally healthy, they can do anything. They can "get through it." The future outcome is independent, strong and confident members of society.

Fact: Our emotions impact the decisions we make - good or bad.

Fact: Stress is a factor that alters your child's healthy emotional state.

According to a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association, young people ages 8 to 17 were surveyed and 44% say doing well in school was a source of stress.

High levels of stress have become common with our younger generations. The culprits that are responsible for the rise in stress are all external: parental income/financial distress, extra-curricular pressures, school and social performance. A person's ability to cope with stressors is directly attributable to his or her emotional health. An impaired ability to rationalize stress can result in anxiety or depression.

Fact: Expectations on young people are greater.

In kindergarden, we are currently schooling our children for longer hours at a younger age.

In high school, young people are required to select their future path at the age of 16 and are given moderate hope that they will be able to pursue them as our universities cannot accommodate the growing number of applicants.

In university, gone is the guarantee that even a successful course of study will result in gainful employment at the end of academic studies.

In Ontario, strikes, teaching staff cuts due to a $55M deficit are mainstream news and though teachers are prohibited from discussing any issues in schools, confused and frustrated parents inevitably do so at home.

Fear and uncertainty can be debilitating.

The emotional health of our youth is, to a large degree, at the mercy of the environment they are in.
